What is Istinja?
The purification or cleanliness of private parts of a person after urination and defecation. This happens when you do urine and poo.
Performing the process of istinja is Sunnat al muakkada. But when gas or a stone has released through private parts of a human then cleaning is not required.
As I said that performing Istinja is an Emphasized Sunnah (Sunnat al muakkada) when we pass impurity from any of our two paths, front and back.
It is the Sunnah of our Beloved Prophet (PBUH) to cleanse the area with the used water. If you have no access to water then you can use stone as well. But at present time, people tissues.
It is suggested to use 3 stones, even if cleanliness is accomplished with less. Allah’s Last Messenger, Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) said that “Do istinja with 3 stones.”
If someone uses more than three stones then it’s also acceptable. But there is another condition such as it is suggested to use odd numbers (3,5 etc.) while performing Istinja.
Is it Permissible to Do Istinja with Simple Paper and Newspaper?
This is most-asked questions by Muslim people. Note that it is not allowed to perform Istinja with simple paper or pieces of a newspaper because these papers contain writing.
You have an option to use toilet paper which is available in the market to dry your private parts after Istinja.
Performing istinja with simple paper is makruh. After washing the private parts, it is mustahab to dry the wetness left on them.
For this purpose, you can also use the clean cloth. But important is that to perform Istinja accurately and clean all impurity on your body. Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) narrated that,
I followed the Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) whereas he was going out to response the call of nature. He (S.A.W) used not to look this way or that.
So, when I come up to near him, He (PBUH) said to me, “Bring for me some pebbles for purifying the private’s parts, and don’t fetch a bone or a piece of dung.”
So, I carried the stones in the corner of my clothing and placed them by his (PBUH) side and I then went away from him (S.A.W). When he (S.A.W) is done, he used stones (to purify himself). (Sahih Al Bukhari: Hadith: 1.157)
This hadith also shows how Istinja or purification is a necessary and obligatory process. We must follow the Sunnah way to clean ourselves externally and internally.
